Death Valley National Park. Death Valley National Park would take a lifetime to fully explore, including not only Death Valley, but also the Eureka Valley and Saline Valley, as well as other bits and pieces.
Salton Sea. Located an hour or two east of San Diego, the Salton Sea is a large saline lake that is saltier than the ocean. Formed many years ago, due to a slight accident of hydrologic engineering, its been here ever since. Each year it gets a bit saltier. There are various plans to reduce the salinity, but since the lake contains enough salt to build a small mountain, I wouldn't bet much on the success of these plans.
